My kitchen becomes what I fondly refer to as “the cookie war zone.” The aftermath is flour, sugar, icing, and icing coloring on every flat surface in the room. But year after year the results are worth every minute of the process, because the cookies become gifts that bring joy to other people. I always marvel that long after the cookies are rolled out, cut out, baked, iced, decorated, and delivered, I still discover icing and sanding sugar in interesting places. I think, how in the world did it end up there, so far away from where all the action took place?

I feel a wonder too, when I think about the love, joy, hope, and peace of Christmas. Out of the town of Bethlehem where all the action took place so long ago, comes every sweet and beautiful thing we celebrate today. Through the birth of our Saviour in a far away land, good news can still be discovered by the seeking heart–God sent His Son to give us life. And no matter how much time passes between His miraculous birth and our celebration of it, we will always be able to find the gifts it brings: love that is pure and unconditional; joy that is true and lasting; hope that is sure and eternal; and peace that is gentle and free.

“Thanks be to God for His indescribable gift!” II Corinthians 9:15

Every gift God gives is wrapped in an eternal blessing.

Depending on what you choose to put on it or in it (which also has endless variations), this simple combination of ingredients can run the gamut from savory to sweet. It’s a beautifully basic stage or wrap for any fruit, cream filling, herb, or vegetable that suits your craving for any meal of the day. One has to love the graciousness of this culinary goodie, willing to be whatever it needs to be for the desire and delight of its maker.

My grandmother wore this kind of graciousness.  She shunned the complex for what she believed to be the simple and basic rule of life: relationships matter most. Her desire and delight was in connecting with people right where they are. There have been footsteps made in history by someone with that kind of heart. He talked with outcasts, dined with sinners, and surrounded Himself with the Who’s Who of the “least likely to succeed.” The words He chose and the ways in which He taught had many variations–but they were always designed to meet individual needs.

Sometimes it’s good to go back to basics. To become the simple, uncluttered stage for God’s love, joy, mercy, and compassion. Everyone He brings across our path has a heart-craving for something: a scoop of love…a dollop of mercy…a pinch of compassion. Only He knows the right ingredient and the perfect measurement–we just need to be ready to serve it with grace.

Success is not measured by our achievements, but by the lives we bless!

When the baking time is up, the cake is still wobbly in the middle–but by faith you take it out and hope for the best. A couple of hours later and in spite of your great act of faith, the cake cracks right down the center during the cooling process. Sigh! As the baker who refuses to give up, you proceed to pour one cup of heavy cream into a bowl so that you can whip it into the perfect topping for the not-so-perfect cheesecake. And now you have it: a cheesecake worthy of presenting to dinner guests.

Not giving up is a beautiful thing. How very often I take a deep breath and thank God for hanging in there with me. What a comforting thought to know that when we finally meet Him, we’ll be “covered” in His mercy and forgiveness, white as snow, and presentable, regardless of how many times our efforts (to act or do as we should) crack. God never gives up on us or the purpose for which He created us. It’s good. It’s satisfying. It’s the longing we carry in our hearts wrapped in the dream we envision in our minds. We need only to decide to get on board with the God who refuses to turn away from us or throw His hands in the air in frustration. Another crack in this one? That’s O.K. I have grace enough to fill it. Wobbling again? Good. I think I’ll teach them to lean on Me even more.

Cheesecake is the dessert we’re told to reserve for special occasions because it’s full of the stuff we should enjoy sparingly. What a wonderful contrast, then, to know we can indulge in every good thing God has for us without the least bit of restraint–and it just doesn’t get any sweeter than that.

God’s grace and goodness are infinite–and they’re sweetened with unconditional love.
